Disease-Resistant Elms
Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is a fungal disease spread by the elm bark beetle. It has drastically reduced native elm populations across North America since it was accidentally introduced in 1928. The Sacramento Tree Foundation is working to fight the threat of DED by introducing disease-resistant cultivars, which have been successful in since their introdution in 1997. High Ranch Nursery offers three of the most recent varieties: Prospector, Accolade and Frontier. These specimens are fast-growing, colorful in fall and offer shade in the summer. They are also drought-tolerant, an important consideration for the water-wise landscaper.
